4 Fabulous Resources for a Rousing Classroom Debate

By

We are so excited for your students to read the debate in the April issue of Scope: "Should the School Day Be Longer?" We know your students will have some very strong opinions on this topic! To better inform their positions, we've curated a list of additional resources. After students read the debate and these resources, have them complete the Essay Kit on their own or hold a class debate. (Check out our guide for using the debate in your classroom here.)

Additional texts for YES, school days should be longer:

The New York Times: “For Us, More Time Is Critical”

The Atlantic: "Kids Who Spend All Day at School"

Guiding Question: How could this information be used to strengthen the argument that the school day SHOULD be extended?

Additional texts for NO, school days should not be longer:

The New York Times: "Let Students Sleep"

The Boston Globe: "Want a Longer School Day? Pay Up"

Guiding Question: How could this information be used to strengthen the argument that the school day SHOULD NOT be extended?
